What is the job of a reserve police officer?

It is working alongside the full time police officers, and augmenting the police force, in order to meet our objective of keeping Foster City a safe place to live, work, and play. What type of person becomes a Reserve Police Officer?

Reserve Officers have varied backgrounds: software development, sales, and construction to name a few. Many Reserve Officers have jobs outside law enforcement, but he or she takes on the job because they like the challenge or the camaraderie or because of a sense of service.

What you will do?

As a Reserve Police Officer, you will be primarily assigned to the Patrol Division where your duties will include:

  • Partner with a full time officer and conduct patrol activities
  • Carry out duties in support of enforcement objectives
  • Conduct patrol during community events
  • Work in a team officers

Requirements:

You must commit to responding to assist the City in case of disaster, state of emergency, or whenever there may be a crisis and supplemental officers are needed. You will be required to perform a minimum of 16 hours of duty a month, which may be accomplished several ways: unit meetings, training, events, and patrol duties.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D
  • 18 years of age at time of application
  • U.S. citizen or have applied for citizenship one year prior to application
  • Must be physically fit, with vision acceptably corrected to 20/20
  • No felony convictions
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License
  • Completion of, or currently enrolled, in a Reserve Level II course or a graduate of a POST Basic Academy
  • Successfully pass a reading and writing ability assessment

Selection Process:

Qualified applicants must complete the POST reading and writing assessment and the physical agility test, which is conducted through South Bay Regional Training Consortium—the Academy. Candidates must obtain a certificate of completion that contains their scores and submit it with their application. Candidates that meet eligibility requirements will move on to a panel interview. Candidates that pass the interview will then move on to the next phases of the selection process:

  • A background investigation
  • Polygraph verification
  • A Captain's Oral Board
  • Psychological & Medical Examinations
  • A Chief's Oral Board

Failure to pass any portion of the process will result in disqualification.

Training:

Newly appointed Reserve Police Officers will have already successfully completed the Reserve Level II course or a Basic Police Academy before appointment. You will participate in the Field Training Program under the supervision of a Field Training Officer, who provides training. Reserve Officers are expected to reach a high level of proficiency. Once you have completed the Field Training Program, a reserve officer is required to complete 16 hours of duty time a month.
