Halloween is an exciting time of the year and a particularly special treat for children.

However, Halloween can be very stressful, as some people may play mean tricks and provide tainted treats. Parents and children should be alert to various hazards.

The following are some crime prevention tips that can help make Halloween safe and more enjoyable for everyone:

Foster City Police Department's Crime Prevention Bureau would like to emphasize to you that during this Holiday Season, don't let the spirit of giving lull you into giving burglars, muggers, and pickpockets a chance to do their dirty work. Criminals love the holidays as much as everyone else, mainly because it is a perfect opportunity to commit a crime.

Keep the following tips in mind for a safe and happy holiday season:

With school in session, there will be significantly more traffic in and around school areas. Pedestrians, bicyclists, buses and cars all contribute to school zone congestion. In addition, children do not always follow the rules of the road. Often they enter the street from between two cars, attempt to "run" red lights with their bikes through intersections, and skateboard or walk into traffic without checking. Some parents cross the street wherever they park, instead of walking to the corner.

The Foster City Police Department would like to remind everyone that fireworks are banned within the city limits.

The Uniform Fire Code adopted by the City of Foster City prohibits any type of fireworks within City limits, including the so-called “safe and sane” variety. The only permitted use of fireworks is for professional fireworks shows, like the one taking place at Ryan Park on the evening of the Fourth.
