Head of the Lagoon was started by a group of master rowers including Ron Hudson and Daryl Winter. It was named after the Monster from the Blue Lagoon movie, and was initially a one day regatta. HOTL has now grown to a two day regatta, hosting junior, collegiate, open, and master teams.

This is an annual 5-km timed trial competition (called a head race) for collegiate teams.
