Youth Advisory Committee

Mission Statement:

The Foster City Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) shall exist as a citizens' group to advise and respond to the City Council in all matters related to the needs of the youth in Foster City and to promote teen involvement in the community.

Membership:

Any resident of Foster City who will be of middle school and/or high school age during the next committee term following his or her appointment is eligible for membership on the YAC. The committee consists of fifteen (15) members. Members must complete application forms by a stated deadline. Interviews are not necessary. Members are appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the majority of the City Council. A majority of the members of the Committee constitute a quorum, which is necessary for any official business to be conducted.

Commitment Contract:

Each Committee member must complete and sign a commitment contract.

School Representatives:

With consensus of the Committee, the Chair may appoint members of the Committee to serve as school representatives. There is one representative for each of the following schools including, but not limited to: San Mateo High School, Hillsdale High School, Aragon High School, Burlingame High School, and Bowditch Middle School. School representatives act as liaisons between the school and the Committee and are responsible for communication and publicity at the school he or she represents.

Attendance:

YAC members are expected to attend all Committee meetings. They must attend 80% (16) of the regularly scheduled meetings to remain in good standing on the Committee. If a member misses more than 20% of the meetings (4), he or she may be removed from the Committee.

Meeting Dates and Time:

The Committee meets regularly once a month, currently on the first  Wednesday of each month, at 7:00 p.m. in The VIBE, 670 Shell Boulevard.

The Youth Center Advisory Committee meets monthly to discuss how to make the Foster City an awesome place for teens.  Advisory Committee members work with Teen Center's Recreation Coordinator to identify teen problems, suggest solutions and to come up with teen special events and programs. Members will also have opportunities to volunteer at various special events. Our Advisory Committee consists of  junior high and high school students (up to 15 members) who reside in Foster City. Each group updates staff on the goings on at each school campus, as well as plans and executes programs and special events throughout the school year. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at The VIBE at 7:00pm. The public is invited to attend.

Meetings & Events

Members are selected to participate in YAC through an annual application process. YAC members meet every month to discuss current youth trends and plan positive events that better their community. Past events and activities include an spaghetti feed, a Halloween festival, and a senior dance.
