DEFINITION:
Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:
This is an entry level, part-time, typically seasonal position.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:
Supervises participants in activities. Receives direct supervision from the Recreation Coordinator and/or Recreation Leader III.
 
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Leads, teaches, demonstrates, officiates activities such as games, special events, trips, tours, arts and crafts activities, dances, and hikes for a variety of age groups. Provides supervision and monitors to assure compliance with safety and game rules and department guidelines. Maintains attendance and activity records and develops lesson or activity plan and program evaluations. Sets up equipment; issues equipment and supplies and collects for storage. Develops ideas and formats for program announcement flyers; provides information and direction on activities. Provides encouragement, feedback and counseling regarding participation. Participates in staff meetings, conferences, training sessions, and makes recommendations on program activities. May supervise staff.
 
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:
If licensed, may drive to other facilities in the City depending on the activity location.
 
JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
Knowledge of:  a variety of recreation and cultural activities for children, equipment and supplies and their proper use.
 
Ability to:  lead participants, communicate activity objectives and rules clearly and effectively; provide information and direction to a wide variety of age groups, conduct games and activities following established rules, guidelines, and time limits; learn, retain and use safety rules and regulations; provide verbal and summarized written feedback on activities; supervise staff.
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:
 
Education:  Completion of the ninth grade or equivalent.
 
Experience:  Experience as a participant in a variety of recreation activities. Some experience in group leadership is desirable.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to: lift and move equipment (up to 25 lbs.); complete forms and reports; to use the telephone to set up and coordinate activities; remain calm and use good judgement in difficult and emergency situations; work flexible hours. Physical strength and stamina will be required in some positions to perform demonstrations and lead activities.

Certificates:  American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Course or equivalent (Including adult, child, infant CPR and Standard First Aid).
