DEFINITION:
Assist in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:
This is a part-time, seasonal, entry level training position.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:
Receives direct supervision and training from Recreation Leader II and III and Recreation Coordinators. Leads participants in activities. Assists in organizing and conducting recreation activities.
 
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Learns to lead, teach, demonstrate and officiate activities such as games, special events, trips, tours, arts and crafts activities, dances, and hikes for a variety of age groups. Monitors and records compliance with safety and department guidelines and game rules. Maintains attendance, activity, supply and equipment records; assist in development of lesson or activity plans and program evaluations. Assists in the use of equipment and supplies. Provides information and directions. Encourages and guides participants. Participates in meetings, conferences, training sessions and relates successes or problems with programs.
 
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:
If licensed, may drive to other facilities in the City depending on the activity location.
 
JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
Knowledge of:  a variety of recreation and cultural activities for children.
 
Ability to:  learn equipment and supply use and care; learn how to provide guidance and instruction, communicate activity objectives, programs and information and directions; learn to conduct games and activities following established rules, guidelines and time limits; learn, retain and use safety rules and department guidelines; learn to evaluate program activities verbally and in writing.
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:
 
Education:  completion of the eighth grade or equivalent.
 
Experience:  volunteer or paid experience with groups of children is desirable.
 
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to: lift and move equipment (up to 25 lbs.); complete forms and reports; to use the telephone to set up and coordinate activities; remain calm and use good judgement in difficult and emergency situations; work flexible hours. Physical strength and stamina will be required in some positions to perform demonstrations and lead activities.

Certificates:  American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Course or equivalent (including adult, child infant CPR and Standard First Aid).
