DEFINITION:
This is a full-time position assigned to coordinate a wide variety of recreation and leisure activities for various age groups. Position requires flexibility in working hours.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:

This is the journey level class within the Recreation Coordinator series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Recreation Coordinator I by the assignment of the full range of duties.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the Department.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Recreation Coordinator I, or when filled from the outside, require prior experience as a recreation coordinator or the equivalent.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:

Receives general supervision from the Recreation Manager and the Parks and Recreation Department Management staff.  Exercises technical and functional supervision to assigned staff.

 
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Under the direction of Recreation Manager and depending on the assignment, this position

  • develops the Department’s quarterly brochure
  • oversees contract classes
  • develops, schedules, implements, supervises and evaluates major recreation and enrichment programs and special events
  • prepares written reports, press releases and public relations materials, flyers and pamphlets for programs
  • participates in the selection and training of staff
  • coordinates and supervises contract instructors, part-time employees, volunteers and outside agencies and organizations
  • attends and conducts training and staff meetings
  • assists in the preparation, monitoring and administration of Department and program budgets, including expenditure justification
  • makes and implements operational decisions in accordance with City policies and procedures
  • promotes effective communication and positive working relationships with other City staff, members of the public, community groups and school district personnel
  • uses personal computers, including desktop publishing, registration, word processing, and other Citywide and Department-specific applications to promote activities and enrollment
  • provides first aid or CPR in the event of an injury or medical emergency situation
  • maintains purchase orders and supplies
  • serves as staff liaison to certain Citizen Advisory Committees
  • coordinates programs and services with schools and community groups
  • provides the Department with customer service with information and follow up to patrons and groups
  • writes staff reports
  • coordinates and implements special events
  • oversees Recreation Department contracts and agreements

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would qualify. A typical way would be:
 
Education:  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Recreation and Leisure Studies or a related field. Equivalent of a BA degree in recreation and leisure or a related field.
 
Experience:  At least three (3) years of professional recreation work experience as a Recreation Coordinator I or the equivalent.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION:
 
Licenses:  Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a good driving record.
