DEFINITION:

This is a full-time position that requires demonstrated competency and increasing independence, knowledge and ability to perform routine and special assignments in the Parks Maintenance Division.

 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:

This position is the entry-level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series.  This class is distinguished from the Parks Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine and standardized tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series.

 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:

Receives direct supervision from Parks Lead Maintenance Workers and Parks Managers and ongoing training on a wide variety of equipment, operational rules, guidelines, procedures and methods.  Employees do not provide supervision to other classifications.

 
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks
  • removes and disposes of trash and litter
  • maintains park and maintenance equipment, buildings and facilities
  • maintains irrigation systems
  • performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects
  • performs minor plumbing or building repair duties
  • supervises and coordinates Sheriff’s Work Program personnel
  • operates small trucks, dump trucks, ride-on and walk-behind mowing equipment
  • utilizes a wide variety of construction tools, mechanical equipment and vehicles
  • spends significant time walking, stooping, bending, squatting, walking, lifting heavy objects, and operating hand and power tools, equipment and vehicles on a daily basis
  • spends considerable time working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • applies pesticides and chemicals to plants, lawns, shrubs and trees
  • may be required to operate heavy equipment
  • may be required to interact with customers on site or when requested
  • may be required to utilize department or City-wide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
Knowledge of:  
  • standard and job-specific methods, materials, terminology and safe work practices of maintenance, construction, and gardening/landscape work
  • equipment and tools used in parks maintenance
 
Skill in:  
  • operating a variety of tools and equipment and performing physical tasks for long periods of time
  • proper lifting, moving and carrying techniques of loads up to 90 pounds
  • safely operating tools, equipment and vehicles
 
Ability to:  
  • listen, understand, retain, follow and apply verbal and written instructions and directions
  • learn the effective and safe operation of equipment, tools and vehicles
  • lift, move and carry loads up to 90 pounds
  • establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
  • respond courteously to public inquiries
  • recognize and use safe work practices
  • learn and retain specific and general information about equipment, functions, and projects
  • provide standby and emergency response coverage (before and after regular work hours, or on weekends or holidays) and work weekend rotations

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:
 
Education:  Completion of a job or technical training program in maintenance, construction, or grounds keeping or completion of high school or the equivalent.
 
Experience:  One (1) year of full time experience as a Parks Maintenance Worker or the equivalent.
 
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION:
 
Licenses:  Possession of a valid California Class "C" and Class “B” Driver's License with appropriate endorsements; meet requirements, maintain license and a good driving record.
