In an effort to increase public safety, the City of Foster City is planning to reduce speed limits around select school campuses. The City Council voted at a meeting Monday, November 17, to approve lowering the speed limit while children are present to 15 mph within 500 feet of Audubon, Brewer Island and Foster City elementary schools as well as Bowditch Middle School.

The streets impacted by this decision are: Crane and Gull avenues near Audubon Elementary School; Swordfish and Tarpon streets near Bowditch Middle School, Niantic and Polynesia Drive near Brewer Island Elementary School; and Polaris Avenue near Foster City Elementary School. Beyond the reduction to 15 mph within 500 feet of the school campuses, the speed limit will be reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph from 500 feet to 1,000 feet of Audubon Elementary School along Gull Avenue, and a similar change will be made along Polynesia Drive near Brewer Island Elementary School.

The reduced speed limits will be officially introduced over the next few months, and new signs will be installed in the impacted school zones to notify drivers of the change. The Foster City Police Department will utilize education and enforcement methods to ensure the new speed limits are adhered to.

Community members are always reminded to use extra caution when driving in or around school zones. For more information and tips on how to keep our students, pedestrians, and drivers safe, please visit Back to School Safety Tips | Foster City California.

“I’m very happy to see the Council approve the lower speed limits, which reflect our community’s commitment to safety,” said Mayor Stacy Jimenez. “I know the Foster City Police Department will work closely with us to ensure these new limits are effectively implemented and enforced.”
