Foster City has begun the process of planning for an Age Friendly Community! The City is interested in hearing from residents who are age 55 and over on what they think would help make Foster City a more “livable” community than it already is for older adults. Residents are invited to participate in one of a series of virtual focus group discussions that will take place throughout the month of September. These meetings will be facilitated by the Center for Age Friendly Excellence (CAFE).

With the goal of providing places for older adults to be engaged, as well as social opportunities and services to ensure older adults can thrive and be part of the community, the focus groups will cover the “eight domains of age-friendly communities” as established by the World Health Organization:

  1. Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
  2. Transportation
  3. Housing
  4. Social Participation
  5. Respect and Social Inclusion
  6. Civic Participation and Employment
  7. Communication and Information
  8. Community Support/Health Services

“We hope residents will hear this call to action, since aging affects us all. I am committed to finding ways we can improve and promote policies that are responsive to the needs of all generations, and applying the ‘lens of aging’ in all that we do as we move forward.” said Age Friendly Community Task Force Liaison/Councilmember Sam Hindi.

Community members interested in participating in the focus group discussions alongside other Foster City residents may email agefriendly@fostercity.org with their contact information. Exact dates and times will be scheduled based on the availability of all participants. Individual phone calls may also be arranged if this is the preferred method for an interested participant.

Additionally, the City welcomes and encourages any thoughts and feedback to be sent in via email. To learn more about the Foster City Age Friendly Community Initiative, please visit www.fostercity.org/agefriendly
