Sustainability: Environmentally, and Socially

Vice Mayor Pollard with Cub Scouts

To me, sustainability is the power to endure.

Foster City has been proactive on this front. Back in 2013 Foster City took a giant first step under blue skies and bright sunshine – sustainability took off.

In January 2017, Sustainable.FosterCity.org was launched to highlight the efforts of the three tenets of the Sustainable Foster City Framework – Economic Development, Environmental Sustainability, and Social Equity & Engagement. The Foster City website (have you checked-out our new look and feel?) allows the City staff and us as policy makers to focus on important programs and initiatives, as well as accomplishments.
Our City is working to help our residents and businesses reduce their energy, water and fuel use, and to reduce disposal into our limited landfill capacity. Trying to build a sustainable future for our kids. This effort can reduce costs, conserve resources, and ultimately reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Our residents and businesses can contribute to these efforts by updating energy and water fixtures, as well as appliances to more energy and/or water efficient models. Transitioning to more renewable sources of electricity, and using less natural gas will also contribute to local and countywide goals.

Finally, public and active transportation choices will reduce emissions from fuel and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

Sustainability requires living within our world’s ability to regenerate the things we need to live. Protecting our future by understanding our past! I believe we can have a sustainable lifestyle today and minimize the effect of using up our natural resources for future generations to come.
Foster City has been looking into our future and designing a sustainable community since 2013, and has embarked on the path Environmentally, Economically, and Socially.

A few weeks back, I was invited to speak to a group of webelos (cub scouts) about my role on the City Council and how my position as a Foster City’s representative on the joint powers authority (JPA) for Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) impacts our City polices. The dialogue between the Scouts and me gave encouragement that our future and our resources are in good hands. Needless to say, we all need to take an active and constructive role in our sustainable growth and future.

Are we as citizens of Foster City doing our part? If not, now is as good of a time as ever to start. Visit http://sustainable.fostercity.org.
