With construction expected to soon begin on the Recreation Center Rebuild Project, big changes are planned for recreational programming in Foster City. The Foster City Recreation Center, located at 650 Shell Blvd., is closing to prepare for reconstruction on Monday, August 19, following completion of the Summer Days Festival. The Recreation Center is slated to remain closed the next two years due to construction activities building the brand-new facility, until the new Recreation Center is opened in 2026.

Programming currently held at the Recreation Center will be displaced during construction. The Vibe Teen Center, located at 670 Shell Blvd., and Community Center, located at 1000 E. Hillsdale Blvd., will serve as temporary locations for much of the programming and recreational activity during this period. Those with questions about potential impacts to specific programs are encouraged to send an email to recreation@fostercity.org or call (650) 286-3380.

“We understand the closure of the Recreation Center for reconstruction can pose challenges and inconveniences for the Foster City community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Derek Schweigart. “But rest assured this disruption will only be temporary. And upon its completion, the new Recreation Center will provide an improved and more vibrant hub of recreation and entertainment for years to come.”

The existing Recreation Center, located in Leo J. Ryan Park, is nearly 50 years old and necessary investment in infrastructure improvements are required to meet current structural, seismic, and programmatic needs, as well as emergency shelter readiness.
