The Levee Improvements Project is scheduled to reopen the Baffin Bridge on or around June 6, making the Baffin Street crossing the current project access point to Belmont/Redwood Shores. A revised detour map is now available on the project website.

Between May 2021 and June 6, 2022, access to Belmont/Redwood Shores from the Levee Improvements Project Bicycle and Pedestrian Alternate Route/Detour has been available along Port Royal Ave or O’Neil Slough Path. The project team has worked to ensure one of the two access points to Belmont/Redwood Shores remains open throughout the project.

“We are pleased with how the project is progressing and are excited to share this news with the community,” said Public Works Director Louis Sun. “The Baffin Bridge reopening demonstrates the team making significant headway. Though operations will continue in the Baffin area, the bridge reopening makes us one step closer toward project completion.”

In June 2021, the contractor resumed work in the Phase 1 area (Port Royal Drive to Shorebird Park), starting with the closure of the Baffin Street crossing to Belmont/Redwood Shores. As part of the project design, two small bridges are being built at the crossings to and from Belmont and Redwood Shores.

In February 2022, operations along Beach Park Boulevard increased as restrictions went into effect along the southern end of the project area due to bird nesting windows. In anticipation of this requirement, the contractor focused efforts in the southern area several months prior to the bird nesting restrictions. Now that the bridge installation and bird nesting surveys are completed, the area is safe for public use. The contractor will return to the Baffin area at a later point to complete paving, landscaping and related work.

As construction continues, the community is reminded that the closed, fenced trail and staging areas are not safe for the public, and trespassing into fenced areas is prohibited at all times.
