Interested in learning about composting food scraps and yard trimmings at home? Join the County of San Mateo’s Sustainability Academy on Saturday, June 22, for a no-cost two-hour workshop to learn the basics of starting your own composting system. The workshop will take place at the Foster City Recreation Center (650 Shell Boulevard, Foster City) from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Learn how easy and fun it is to recycle your fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, and plant cuttings into nutrient-rich compost that helps your garden retain moisture, suppress weeds, and prevent soil erosion, while cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Learn about different composting systems and how to maintain them, interesting aspects of composting science, and how to use compost as a valuable resource. You don’t even need a backyard to have your own composting system. There will also be a demonstration bin complete with live worms. Discounts and rebates for free compost and worm compost bins will be distributed to County residents. Foster City residents will be eligible for an additional rebate through the City’s Compost Bin Incentive Program. For more information about the rebate, visit www.fostercity.org/publicworks/page/compost-bin-incentive-program.

Admission to the Home Compost Workshop is free, but space is limited. To register for the workshop, visit https://sustainability_academy.eventbrite.com. For questions about the workshop, call (888) 442-2666 or email sustainability@smcgov.org.
