Collision Resulting in Death of Bicyclist

On March 23rd, 2018, at about 11:25 a.m., the Foster City Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist.  The collision occurred at the intersection of East Hillsdale Boulevard and Foster City Boulevard.  According to the initial investigation, the bicyclist, a 78 year-old male Foster City resident, was crossing East Hillsdale Boulevard in the eastbound direction in the westbound lanes when he was struck in the intersection by a blue Toyota Camry being driven northbound on Foster City Boulevard.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the bicyclist on the roadway badly injured and immediately began emergency medical treatment. The bicyclist was quickly transported to Stanford Medical Center for additional emergency medical assistance. While at the hospital, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and passed away.   

The names of the bicyclist and driver are not being released at this time. The exact cause of this collision remains under investigation. This tragic incident punctuates the need for bicyclists to always exercise due caution when crossing an intersection. Bicyclists are reminded to adhere to traffic control devices and follow all roadway rules. Additionally, it is always a good idea to try and make eye contact with a driver before crossing in front of them. For drivers, always be aware of bicyclists in and around roadways and be prepared to yield for them.
