In March 2022, the SamTrans Board of Directors approved a set of changes to the SamTrans bus network as part of the Reimagine SamTrans project. This new network was crafted after careful consideration of the feedback received over the course of two and a half years. Starting August 7, SamTrans will be using that feedback to implement a new, streamlined bus network.

In Foster City, the new routing is designed to streamline service, make it easier to understand, offer improved punctuality, and provide more functional access to the new Hillsdale Caltrain station, which is now located significantly further from East Hillsdale Blvd. SamTrans continues to offer the FCX, the network’s only Express Route into San Francisco.  For more information, visit: https://www.samtrans.com/route-fcx.

Additionally, Routes 251 and 256 will be consolidated into a new version of Route 251 to serve the highest ridership stops and densest areas in Foster City. Buses will serve Foster City Boulevard, Beach Park Boulevard, and Edgewater Boulevard. Buses will use Fashion Island Boulevard instead of Hillsdale Boulevard in and out of Foster City. Residents on portions of Hillsdale Boulevard, Beach Park Boulevard, and Shell Boulevard will need to walk further to access the bus. Also note that school-oriented trips serving Hillsdale High School will remain and be renamed as Route 51. For more information, visit: https://www.samtrans.com/route-251 and https://www.samtrans.com/route-51.

And service on Route 398 in Foster City will be reduced to a limited route with two trips in the morning and two trips in the afternoon. For more information, visit https://www.samtrans.com/route-398.

The new bus network will be delivered over the next year and is designed to achieve:

  • Equity: Prioritize buses to high need communities.
  • Efficiency: Create faster, reliable service through more direct and consolidated routes.
  • Connections: Provide expanded all-day service, and more service to transit hubs and job centers.

SamTrans is now using this valuable input to implement a new, streamlined bus network with brand new service areas and connection, faster and more direct routes, and simpler, easier to understand routes.

But it doesn't stop there. Even after these changes take effect August 7th, SamTrans will further implement the full Reimagine SamTrans service plan. SamTrans encourages everyone to visit https://www.samtrans.com/schedules/timetableupdates for a summary of all the route changes that will take effect on August  7.
