Repair work is currently underway to fix a break to the City’s main water line which was discovered around 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 7, along E. Third Avenue north of Foster City Boulevard. Crews began working overnight to address the issue, and the City is optimistic that the repairs will be completed by 8 p.m. on Monday, April 8. In the interim, Foster City is relying on a reserve water supply, and an external, supplemental water supply source has been identified as well. As a result, residents and businesses are being asked to turn off all irrigation and conserve water to the best of their ability. Water service may be potentially shut off overnight between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., if necessary, but more information will be available in the coming hours.

City Manager Stefan Chatwin has issued a proclamation of local emergency, which will need to be ratified at a future City Council meeting, that will make the City eligible to receive governmental aid for the emergency response. City staff has been directed to turn off all irrigation in parks and open spaces, and similar action has been requested from local partners. The City has set up a dedicated webpage for the community to receive more information and informational updates about the issue: https://www.fostercity.org/publicworks/page/emergency-repairs-citys-wate.... The City’s social media platforms will be updated regularly with more information as well, and a City update on progress will be issued this afternoon at 4 p.m.

“I am confident that the leak will be fixed and the issue resolved as soon as possible. We have immensely talented and dedicated staff working around the clock to fix the leak, and I’m collaborating closely with our executive leadership team and emergency response personnel to assure contingencies are in place and all matters are comprehensively considered and addressed,” said City Manager Stefan Chatwin.
