After a months-long research and stakeholder input process, Burks Toma Architects will present preliminary Conceptual Designs for the Recreation Center Master Plan project at a joint meeting of the Planning Commission and Parks and Recreation Committee on October 18, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the City Council Chambers, 620 Foster City Boulevard.

This is an open meeting that the public is encouraged to attend to see the concept alternatives that are being developed for consideration by the City Council at its meeting on October 29, 2018.  The goal in developing the concept alternatives is to reflect back to the community the programmatic and site requirements that were documented from the community input process between October 2017 and April 2018.

After being selected by the City Council to complete the Conceptual Design project, Burks Toma Architects spent many months studying the project climate and current facility trends, needs assessment, program fiscal viability and opportunities and constraints of the site, prior to development of the actual conceptual designs.  The proposed conceptual designs are a culmination of many hours of stakeholder input and public outreach along with assessment of existing and future conditions such that the resulting project will be a valuable addition for our Community’s use for many years to come.

At this meeting, the Planning Commission and Parks and Recreation Committee members will be asked for any final input prior to a presentation to the City Council on October 29, 2018.  The Planning Commission and Parks and Recreation Committee have been vital partners throughout the project’s lifecycle. The final conceptual design alternatives along with a feasibility and fiscal analysis will be considered by the City Council at a special meeting on November 26, 2018.

The William E Walker Recreation Center in Leo J. Ryan Memorial Park was opened to the public in 1974.  The current need for significant structural upgrades and repairs to this aging facility has dictated the timing to evaluate the best and highest use of the facility and its immediately surrounding park amenities.  In order to gather the information necessary for making a decision about the project, the City completed a Community Input Study between October 2016 and April 2017.  The City awarded a contract to Burks Toma Architects to develop a Recreation Center Conceptual Design Plan in March 2018.
