Foster City, USPS, and Office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier Work to Reopen Post Office

The United States Postal Service (USPS) Office temporarily closed its Charter Square Shopping Center location on January 31, 2018. The closure was due to a lease expiration and the upcoming construction of a new elementary school on the current site. Until a new post office reopens, Foster City customers are being directed to the Main Post Office at 1630 South Delaware Street in San Mateo to access personal P.O. boxes and postal services.

In November 2016, the USPS had notified the City that their lease at the shopping center would expire in December of 2017.  City Staff immediately began working with USPS representatives to assist in their search for a new Foster City home. “Postal services are extremely important to our community. The Charter Square Post Office has enjoyed the loyal patronage of local residents for many years.” said Foster City’s Assistant City Manager Dante Hall. “We were happy to assist the USPS in their outreach by hosting a meeting at our Community Center in July of last year to allow their representatives to discuss the post office relocation process and field questions from the community.”

In December 2017, the USPS identified 750 Alma Lane in Foster City as its new proposed office location and anticipated starting construction once a lease agreement was signed. However, this process has taken much longer than expected.  “I have concerns about how a prolonged closure of the post office in Foster City will inconvenience our residents and businesses.” said Foster City’s City Manager Kevin Miller. “The Foster City Post Office was heavily used by our residents, particularly seniors and others who rely on postal services in their daily lives.” said City Manager Miller.

Since the USPS is managed by the Federal Government and not under the purview of local officials, City Staff is working along with USPS officials and the Office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier to finalize the selection of the permanent post office. The group is also meeting to discuss a potential temporary location for postal services in Foster City until the new location opens for business.
