Foster City Hires Derek Schweigart as Parks and Recreation Director

The City of Foster City is excited to announce that Derek Schweigart has been selected to serve as the next Parks and Recreation Director. Mr. Schweigart has more than 25 years of experience working in the public sector, most recently serving as the General Manager for the Highlands Recreation District in San Mateo and previously as the Community Services Director for the City of Menlo Park. He will start in Foster City on Monday, May 9.

While serving as both the Assistant Director and Community Services Director for Menlo Park, Mr. Schweigart led a department that oversaw a broad range of recreation programs and facilities serving children to seniors, including managing multiple community centers, two city pools, licensed childcare, youth and adult sports, special events, and more. He was also responsible for leading several high-profile strategic initiatives and projects including a neighborhood visioning process, the Bedwell Bayfront Park Master Plan, the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the completion of the city’s first ever inclusive playground.

“I’m excited to be a part of the Foster City team and have the opportunity to contribute to and lead important projects like the new Recreation Center and Parks Master Plan implementation,” he said. “Foster City’s Parks and Recreation programs are known for their excellence and the team of professionals and leaders that make them possible.”

Interim City Manager Edmund Suen expressed his enthusiasm over Mr. Schweigart’s hiring. “We are delighted that Derek Schweigart will become Foster City’s next Park and Recreation Director. Our many educational and creative programs, amazing events, and beautiful outdoor spaces have long been a source of pride in Foster City, and we are confident he will help expand and enhance these wonderful community amenities,” he said.

Recreation is Mr. Schweigart’s passion, and when he is not working he likes to stay active by participating in CrossFit, hiking, road biking, and is also a big fan of our regional, state, and national parks. His other joy is helping to raise his two children who keep him moving all the time.
