Free Smoke Detectors for Foster City Residents

The Foster City Fire Department, in partnership with the Foster City Lions Club, Orchard Supply Hardware, First Alert and Kidde Safety, is pleased to offer free smoke detectors and installation for Foster City residents who would otherwise be unable to obtain and install smoke detectors in their homes.

FREE DETECTORS AND INSTALLATION for Foster City households with an occupant over 62 or who is unable to purchase smoke detectors.

  • Smoke detectors save lives. This program is an effort to increase the personal safety of Foster City citizens in their homes.
  • If you are a Foster City resident who qualifies for a free smoke detector, contact Fire Marshal John Mapes at 650-286-3350.

FREE INSTALLATION OF PURCHASED SMOKE DETECTORS for all other Foster City households.

  • The Foster City Fire Department urges all households to install detectors throughout the home and test them regularly. For specific advice on where to place smoke detectors, follow this link. (www.fostercity.org/FAQs/Smoke-Detector-Placement.cfm)
  • Smoke detectors can generally be purchased for under $10 at Orchard Supply Hardware and other local vendors. Make sure any smoke detector that you purchase is UL listed. (It will give this information on the box.)
  • All households are encouraged to have their homes fire safety inspected by Foster City Fire Department personnel free of charge. Existing detection devices will be inspected and, if needed, recommendations will be made for increasing personal safety.

Offer good while supplies last. For more information on the Free Smoke Detector Program, contact the Foster City Fire Marshal at 650-286-3350.

The City of Foster City thanks the Foster City Lions Club members who are volunteering their time to install the detectors at no charge and Orchard Supply Hardware, First Alert and Kidde Safety who donated the detectors.
