Planning Permits
A planning permit is required for almost all exterior changes to any residential, commercial or industrial building in Foster City. The purpose of the permit is to ensure that the proposed exterior change complies with city codes and will be architecturally compatible with the existing site or building and other area sites or buildings The permit also ensures that such changes will not unduly infringe on the views and privacy of adjacent buildings.
This type of review has been a part of Foster City since its creation and is a major reason that developments in Foster City are more attractive and better maintained than in many other communities.
Exterior changes include fences, decks, windows, doors, room additions, trellises, patio covers and gazebos. A permit is usually required whether the exterior change involves new construction or replacement.
The planning permit is called a Use Permit or an Architectural Review Permit, depending on the extent of the proposed change and whether or not the property is on the waterfront.
