FAQ - Foster City Lagoon Levels

Question: Why does the lagoon level fluctuate?

Answer: In the Winter, around November 15, the lagoon level is lowered. Our primary reasons are: To minimize the potential of flooding; to help maintenance personnel clean over 1,000 storm catch basins throughout the City; to comply with the Regional Water Quality Control Board operational requirements. In the Summer, around mid-March, the lagoon level is raised. Our primary reasons are: To maximize the recreational opportunities in the lagoon; to maximize water quality and clarity; to minimize detrimental bacteria growth; to minimize the nutrient concentrations in the lagoon; to minimize the cost of pump maintenance and operations; to comply with the Regional Water Quality Control Board operational requirements. If you have any questions or concerns about lagoon levels, call the Public Works Maintenance Department.
