FAQ - Window or door replacement - Permit

Question: Do I need a permit to replace a window or door?

Answer: Window and Door replacements may require an Architectural Review from the Planning/Code Enforcement Division or a Building Permit from the Building Inspection Division or both. To determine if a permit is required please contact the Planning/Code Enforcement Division. Although permits may not be required in other cities for this type of improvement, it is common in Foster City.

Replacing an existing first story rear or side yard window with garden or greenhouse style windows does not require Planning approval unless you are in a planned development but does require a building permit.

Bay and Bow window replacements (even if the opening remains the same size) requires an Architectural Review and a Building Permit. For submittal requirements please contact the Planning/Code Enforcement Division and the Building Inspection Division.
