FAQ - What Makes Airplane Noise

Question: What makes airplane noise?

Answer: Airplane noise mainly comes from the engines that power the airplane. Large quantity of air issuing from the exhausts of the jet engines is the source of the so-called jet noise ? resulting from its violent turbulent mixing with the ambient air. This jet exhaust noise is the dominant noise source during airplane takeoff. The high speed fan and compressors that draw the air into the engines to create thrust also make high pitch whining sound that is annoying. This is most noticeable during landing operations. Air flows over the body and certain parts of the moving airplane (e.g. flaps and gears) is another source of noise at landing operations. In different proportions depending on the operations, these three general sources ? jet, fan, and flow over body - make up for the total noise of an airplane in flight.
