FAQ - Does Foster City have a Heritage Tree Ordinance?

Question: Does Foster City have a Heritage Tree Ordinance?  Do I need a permit to remove a tree?

Answer: No, Foster City does not have a heritage tree ordinance.  A permit is not required to remove trees in the R-1 (Single Family Residence) District.

Approval from the Planning/Code Enforcement Division is required to remove trees that were part of an approved landscape plan. Permits may be required for landscape modifications in Planned Developments (common area and on individual properties in the planned development, commercial properties and multifamily developments (apartment complexes). Prior to removing landscape materials please contact the Planning/Code Enforcement Division to determine if a permit is required.

Coordination and encroachment permits from the Public Works Department are required for trees in the public right-of-way.
