On August 24, 2016 at 2:11 PM, the Foster City and San Mateo Fire Departments responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof at 1169 Chess Drive in Foster City. The first fire unit was on scene in 4 minutes 29 seconds and reported a fire in a commercial building. The building is a 14 unit single story business complex. The fire was located in Unit H, which was near the center of the row of businesses in that building. The fire was in the ceiling area and rear warehouse area. Foster City Police units assisted with providing perimeter control and kept traffic out of the area. Smoke from the fire was visible on Highway 92 and resulted in some traffic delays.

A second alarm was dispatched bringing resources from Belmont, Redwood City, Central County Fire, and County Fire to the scene for a total of 8 engines, 2 ladder trucks, an air support unit, and 5 chief officers. The main fire was extinguished in 30 minutes and crews spent several hours extinguishing smolders spot fires in the structure. There was one reported injury to the occupant of the unit where the fire occurred. That patient was transported to a local hospital for further care. No firefighters were injured.

Fire damage was throughout Unit H, primarily in the ceiling area, and Unit G and J will need repairs to the roof and garage door that were damaged during fire extinguishment operations. Approximately a dozen large fresh water fish were saved and are now under the care of the Peninsula Humane Society.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Early damage estimates are approximately $150 thousand dollars damage to the structure, and an equal amount to the contents. The property was turned over to the property management company who was securing the site.
