FLOOD INSURANCE RATE MAP (FIRM)

With the completion of the City of San Mateo's Bayfront Levee Improvements Project and certification of the improvements by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), FEMA has formally notified the City of Foster City that a revised Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) will become effective on October 16, 2012. Foster City's flood classification will remain as Zone X for the land areas (areas protected by levees from 100-year flood; flood insurance is not mandatory), while the lagoon will remain as Zone A (special flood hazard areas, no base flood elevations determined).

The revised FIRM has been prepared in a countywide format, which means that flood hazard information for all jurisdictions within San Mateo County has been combined into one FIRM. The FIRM can be found at the following website:  http://www.floodmaps.fema.gov under FEMA Map Service Center.

While flood insurance is not mandatory, FEMA does encourage the purchase of flood insurance by homeowners who live behind a levee.
