City of Foster City Celebrates National Preparedness Month
For Immediate Release: August 31, 2017
Contact: Jenelle Masterson, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, (650) 522-7960, eprep@fostercity.org
September is National Preparedness Month! The City of Foster City will celebrate National Preparedness Month 2017 by sharing emergency preparedness tips throughout the month on its social media channels, holding a drawing for a personal preparedness kit valued at over $40 for community members who participate in the Foster City National Preparedness Month Survey, and kicking off its fall session of the wildly successful Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. The celebration of National Preparedness Month will culminate with a Fire and Police Department Open House on October 7, 2017 from 10:00 a.m-2:00 p.m.

Every September since 2004, America has celebrated National Preparedness Month. This year's theme is "Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can." This theme serves as a reminder that we all must take action to prepare now and throughout the year for the types of emergencies that could affect us where we live, work and play. Communities across the country take the opportunity to remind individuals, families and organizations of the vital role that personal preparedness has in the ability of a community to effectively respond to and recover from natural and manmade disasters.

"The City of Foster City is committed to educating the community about hazards in Foster City and providing the tools and strategies needed to prepare for those disasters," says Jenelle Masterson, Foster City's Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. "If individuals, families, and organizations take just small steps to prepare an emergency communication plan, assemble necessary items into an emergency kit, or obtain basic disaster skills training through our free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program, then we will have a community that can help each other, rather than needing help, in a disaster."

National Preparedness Month is just a calendar page away in September, so remember "Disasters Don't Plan Ahead. You Can." Consider signing up for the next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program, a free eight week program beginning on October 5, 2017. Keep an eye on Foster City's social media outlets for weekly preparedness tips. Sign up at www.SMCAlert.info to receive emergency alerts and notifications on your mobile devices. Don't' forget to stop by the Fire and Police Department Open House on October 7, 2017, where you can pick up some resources to help you prepare and meet your public safety personnel.
