On Monday, August 8, 2016, the City Council of Foster City learned about the City’s Economic Development Strategic Plan during a Council Study Session. Council was given a presentation by staff outlining key initiatives relating to Economic Development in the City of Foster City. Council member Sam Hindi said during the meeting, “I’m very excited about what we have in front of us today. This will move us in the right direction, based on the City Council’s vision for the future economic health of our community. The plan identifies action items that will benefit our community-at-large and it contains specific deliverables to help small, medium and large businesses in Foster City.”

Assistant City Manager Dante Hall presented a series of goals for a 2-year Economic Development Strategic Plan. These focused goals include good governance & communication, leveraging private investment, recruiting new businesses in priority locations / industries, supporting business growth & development, protecting existing affordable workforce housing, and transportation & circulation networking to meet community needs. Assistant City Manager Hall stated, “We believe if we are able to implement these measures as we continue to engage our community stakeholders on the larger economic development goals, the plan will help make Foster City the most competitive place in our region for bio-medical, technology, research and development, financial services companies and the businesses that support them to do business.”

Mayor Herb Perez said, “This (plan) is about better community partnerships with our corporate citizens and the benefits to our city.” One of the first initiatives developed from the Strategic Plan and in the area of good governance & communication, is the Business Ombudsman Program. The Business Ombudsman serves as the liaison between the City and the business community, is responsible for addressing the questions and concerns of local businesses, and guarantees that the City's merchants receive prompt and complete responses.
