Chief Joe Pierucci
Joe Pierucci has resided in Foster City since he was 5 years old. He attended the original Foster City School (now the Brewer Island site), Bowditch Middle School, and played many years of baseball on the seashell filled Little League ball fields along Shell Boulevard. While growing up, Joe peddled his bicycle through every corner of town and came to know Foster City like the back of his hand.
After graduating from Hillsdale High School and the College of San Mateo, Joe followed in his father's footsteps (Joe Sr.) and began his law enforcement career with the San Mateo Police Department in 1986. After several years as a patrol officer, he moved to the detective bureau where he investigated homicides, robberies, sexual assaults and property crimes. Joe returned to patrol as a field training officer and trained numerous recruit officers in the fundamentals of street patrol. Joe next worked as a school resource officer at San Mateo High School before being promoted to sergeant. After working as a night shift patrol sergeant, Joe became the SMPD Community Service supervisor overseeing the SMPD PAL program, Neighborhood Watch, crime prevention and community policing.
In February of 2009, Joe eagerly jumped at an opportunity to return to his original hometown when he accepted a Lieutenant's position with the Foster City Police Department. His duties included management of patrol, Department training, recruit-officer field training, the SWAT team, traffic division, and field evidence technicians. After arriving at FCPD, Joe returned to school and earned a bachelor's degree in Organizational Management. In October of 2012, Joe was promoted to Captain and was initially in charge of the FCPD Administrative Division, which includes oversight of the Detective Bureau, Records Division, Dispatch Center, Administrative Sergeant, and Youth Services Corporal. Shortly thereafter, Joe took over command of the Patrol Division, overseeing all patrol related activities within the FCPD. He also served as President of the San Mateo County Law Enforcement Commanders Association.
In April of 2016, Joe succeeded retired Chief Matt Martell at the helm of FCPD. Upon his appointment to Chief, Pierucci said, "As a child growing up here, Foster City gave so very much to me personally and I found the City to be a great place to live, work and play! I am both honored and privileged to be able to serve our great community in this new capacity and to lead our stellar Police Department in a continuing tradition of excellence."
Joe has two children who both attended Audubon, Bowditch, and Hillsdale High School. His son proudly serves with the US Army, working on Blackhawk Helicopters and his daughter attends and plays softball at the University of California at Monterey Bay. Over the years he volunteered his time with both the Foster City Little League and Foster City Youth Softball associations. Joe is also a member of the Foster City Lions Club.
