The Traffic Bureau works closely with other City departments and community agencies to resolve traffic issues at the neighborhood level and to reduce the number of vehicle, bicycle, pedestrian collisions and the incidents of drinking and driving. Traffic Officers accomplish this goal by using:
  • A combination of enforcement, education and awareness programs
  • Driving under the influence checkpoints
  • Focused Enforcement Patrols
  • Traffic safety presentations
  • Bicycle Rodeos
  • Radar Trailer
  • Parking Enforcement

The Traffic Bureau is managed by the Traffic Lieutenant and is comprised of a Traffic Sergeant and two Motorcycle Traffic Officers, who are currently using two BMW motorcycles, a 2007 BMW R 1150 RT-P and a 2009 BMW R 1200 RT-P.  The Motor Officers must pass an intensive 80-hour Police Motorcycle Officer School in addition to Traffic Collision Investigation Schools and Radar/Lidar Operator Schools.

Our Traffic Officers respond to traffic collisions to handle scene management and take collision reports, patrol for traffic violators and issue traffic citations as well as handling concerns such as traffic congestion and other traffic hazards. In addition to all these duties, Traffic Officers also supplement the regular patrol teams by responding to calls for service when the need arises.

Speed, one of the leading causes of collisions, is enforced through the use of laser and radar devices. Each Motor Officer is equipped with one of these devices. The men and women in law enforcement are aware that nobody likes to receive a citation; however, the reality is that the most effective way to modify bad driving habits is through proactive enforcement. The Traffic Bureau also utilizes display trailers in order to combat speeding. Mobile speed display radar trailers are rotated throughout the City to inform motorists of their speeds and serve as an educational tool. It is the goal of the Traffic Bureau to continue to have Foster City be one of the safest cities in which to drive. If you have a complaint about traffic or parking on your street, please feel free to contact us via the phone or send us an e-mail. Please be as specific as you can about complaints, so the Traffic Officers can be more effective with directed enforcement.
