Traffic Signal Replacement Project

Foster City, CA; June 26, 2009

Motorists are advised that the City of Foster City will be replacing the red and green LED (Light Emitting Diode) traffic signal faces at every signalized intersection in Foster City. The work is scheduled to begin around July 1 and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

To change out the signal faces, the contractor will set up a bucket truck in the traffic lanes below the signals and place traffic control measures in place. Although the activity is expected to cause little traffic delay, the City appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation during this equipment up-grade.

LED traffic signals are 70% more energy efficient than traditional traffic signal lamps. Foster City first installed LED traffic signal lamps in 1999. Because diodes can degrade over time, this replacement has been planned to ensure the continued optimal performance of the all of Foster City’s traffic signals. The new signal faces also utilize newer technology that more closely resembles the appearance of a single light source and intensifies the light observed by drivers.

If you have any questions or concerns or would like more information regarding this project, please contact the Foster City Public Works Department at 286-3270.
