Six Year Old Karate Champ Takes 3 Gold Medals

Foster City, CA; April 1, 2009

undefinedOn March 1, 2009 Edwards Karate School hosted its annual Intra-school Children and Youth Karate tournament in Foster City. Six year old Audrey Chen, one of the tournament’s youngest participants, was the only competitor to take home 3 gold medals. Audrey competed in the forms “Kata” event, and 2 divisions in the sparring “Kumite” event.

Edwards Karate School holds classes through the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department and is headquartered in Foster City but has students throughout the Peninsula including, but not limited to, Belmont, Burlingame, Daly City, San Bruno, and San Carlos.

Over 70 students ranging in age from 5-17 years participated in the tournament. Almost all competed in more than one event in both “forms” (kata) and “sparring” (kumite), and many competed in more than one division within the events.

Chief Master Instructor Bernard Edwards created the Intra-school Children and Youth Tournament to introduce to students the concept of a karate tournament. It teaches students about preparing and training for a specific purpose and allows them to compete in a friendly atmosphere. At the end of the day, the students walk away the same way they came in – as classmates and friends.
