The Estero Municipal Improvement District has announced that it will conduct routine fire hydrant flushing from Tuesday, June 2, 2009 through the middle of July.
Residents will receive notification of the specific area to be flushed at least 24 hours prior to testing in the area. Although the water is safe to drink, the water may appear cloudy or discolored immediately following hydrant testing. As much as possible, it is recommended that residents do not do any laundry or showering during hydrant flushing activities in their areas. Residents may wish to put aside some clear water to be available during the flushing. Once flushing is completed in the area, it is recommended that residents run the bath tub tap for 3-5 minutes or until only clear water comes out.
In order to conserve water, the City has maintained the water distribution system without flushing the water lines since 2007. The City will remain vigilant about using the least possible amount of water during this flushing operation. Hydrant flushing on a periodic basis is important because it improves drinking water quality by removing accumulated sediment from the water system and tests the operation of the city’s fire hydrants to ensure that they will operate properly in the event of an emergency.
Everyone’s understanding and cooperation is appreciated during this important program.
