Eighth Annual Foster City Pacific Islands Festival Tapa to Tivaevae – Transition from Ancient Barkcloth to Modern Day Quilts

Foster City, CA; April 13, 2011
 

Bring the ‘ohana (family) and celebrate the cultures of Polynesia at the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department’s eighth annual Polynesian Festival on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 10 AM to 5 PM at the Leo Ryan Park Amphitheater, located at the corner of East Hillsdale and Shell Boulevards!

Learn about the different types of barkcloth or “tapa” that is made throughout the region, the purpose and cultural significance of giving and receiving tapa as a gift as well as the modern day transition to fabric quilts.

There will be tantalizing cultural performances from award-winning professional Polynesian Dance companies including, Ehulani’s ‘Ote’a/Kaulana Na Pua O Hawaii of Hayward, Kawailehua Hula Ohana of Milpitas, Le Poly Nui of Stockton, Merahi o Tehani of Union City, Le Poly Nui of Stockton, Motu’aina of Danville, Nemenzo of Daly City, and ‘Ote’a ‘Api of Fremont.

Don’t miss this exciting day of cultural activities, arts and crafts booths, canoe rides offered by Ho’okahi Pu’uwai Outrigger Canoe Club, food and more! Admission is free, however food and drinks are available for purchase.
