Motorists are advised that construction work will be beginning soon on four of Foster City’s bridges that span the City’s lagoon: Foster City Boulevard Bridge, Shell Boulevard Bridge, E. Hillsdale (Rainbow) Bridge, and Beach Park Boulevard (Bicentennial) Bridge. The work will include replacement of bridge joint seals, installation of concrete joint headers, repair of spalled concrete areas, concrete crack sealing, bridge deck sealing, concrete overlay, debris removal, and traffic control. Work is tentatively scheduled to begin in early August 2010.

The City’s general contractor for this project is Truesdell Corporation. Work activities will normally take place Monday through Friday, between 9 AM and 4 PM, in order to avoid peak traffic periods. However, there may be instances when work activities will need to take place outside the normal periods. Because of the extensive work required, the project is expected to take approximately ten weeks to complete. However, weather or unforeseen conditions may affect the overall schedule.

The bridges will generally remain open to traffic in each direction during the work, with construction traffic control and lane closures in effect. However, the east side (northbound direction) of the Shell Boulevard Bridge will be closed for approximately one week to accommodate the placement of a polyester concrete overlay on the bridge deck. Special traffic control will be implemented during this period to maintain traffic in each direction. The Shell Boulevard Bridge closure is tentatively scheduled for the week of September 20, 2010. Staff will disseminate traffic advisory information in advance of the closure. Motorists should expect delays and plan extra time for travel while construction is underway.

Motorists are also advised to seek alternate routes if possible. Updated construction scheduling information will be posted on the City’s website as it becomes available. The City appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation with any inconvenience as we complete this maintenance and repair work to our City bridges.
