City Utilizes Alternative Process to Improve Sustainability of Street Repaving Project
Foster City, CA; August 18, 2011
In an effort to reduce the waste associated with street repaving, the City of Foster City has amended its contract with Archibald Paving Company of Redwood City in order to use asphalt cold-in-place recycling technique as part of the Residential Street Resurfacing Project (CIP 613) currently underway.
In lieu of the traditional method of localized asphalt repair and grinding, asphalt cold-in-place recycling work consists of recycling the existing pavement in place thus creating a new roadway base course suitable for overlaying.
Cold-in-place recycling is not suitable for all resurfacing projects but has been determined to be feasible for the work being done on Catamaran Street, Spinnaker Street and Cutter Street. Utilizing cold-in-place recycling will minimize the amount of material to be off hauled, reduce the carbon footprint and result in a better street structure. On top of the roadway base, the street will receive 2 inches of asphalt overlay.
The Residential Street Resurfacing Project started on August 1, 2011 with crack sealing and localized asphalt repairs on various streets. The project is expected to require about 6 weeks to complete. While the project is underway, streets may be temporarily closed and street parking prohibited during the day(s) that streets are worked on. Signage and notices will alert residents to the schedule for work and information is also available at the link below.
