FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 31 Special Meeting on School Overcrowding in Foster City

Foster City, CA; July 30, 2009

The City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers at 620 Foster City Boulevard. The purpose of the meeting will be to consider a request from the San Mateo – Foster City School District (District) to use one of the four following City properties as a site for a fourth elementary school: Boothbay Park, Port Royal Park, the vacant 15 acre site adjacent to the Government Center, or the vacant 3.9 acre site at the terminus of Halibut Street and Beach Park Boulevard.

The District is facing projected enrollments that will exceed the current capacity of its three elementary schools in Foster City. Their preferred solution is to build a fourth school on land the District would acquire from the City.

The City Council invites public comments at the August 31st special meeting on the issue of school overcrowding due to the projected increase in student enrollment and how best to address this issue, including the District’s request to acquire City property as a site for a fourth elementary school.

Following input from the public, the City Council will make a decision regarding the use of any of the four City properties for a fourth elementary school and will provide any other direction or comments that address the issue of school overcrowding due to the projected increase in school enrollment in Foster City elementary and middle schools.

“The City Council is responsible for making decisions that will benefit the whole community. We represent many interests and want to make sure we hear from a broad representation of our community as we consider this important decision,” said Mayor John Kiramis.

The agenda and meeting materials will be available by Monday, August 24, 2009 at www.fostercity.org/city_hall/council/Index.cfm or at City Hall, 610 Foster City Boulevard. City Council meetings are broadcast on FCTV Comcast Channel 27, AT&T Channel 99 and online at www.fostercity.tv.

Written comments may be sent to schoolcapacity@fostercity.org or City of Foster City, 610 Foster City Boulevard, Foster City, CA 94404, Attention: School Capacity Comments. Written comments received by Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 5 PM will be considered by the City Council.
