Job Specification
DEFINITION:
Under direction performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on municipal buildings, facilities, vehicles, and equipment; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:
This position is assigned a variety of tasks related to facilities and vehicle maintenance and repair. The Building and Vehicle Maintenance Worker is semi-skilled requiring only a basic working knowledge of the building trades related to facilities, vehicle, and small equipment (e.g., lawnmowers, electric trimmers, etc.) maintenance and repair. This classification is associated with the general upkeep and maintenance of recreational facilities and equipment.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED:
Receives supervision and direction from the Building and Vehicle Maintenance Manager.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The duties and responsibilities listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all of the duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled plumbing, carpentry, painting and electrical activities associated with the maintenance and repair of City facilities.

Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems and a variety of plumbing fixtures such as faucets, sinks, toilets and water heaters.

Clean, wash and service motorized equipment; conduct preventative maintenance checks on a wide variety of City-owned equipment, maintains riding lawn mowers, power lawn mowers, edgers, blowers, weeding machines, chainsaws, generators, power tamper, roller and stripping machines, and other power equipment from Parks or Public Works Departments.

Performs carpentry on City buildings; makes repairs to tile and carpet as necessary; makes repairs on doors, windows, floors, gates, roofs, and ceilings; repairs, installs, and constructs furniture, shelves, cabinets, countertops, and other wood equipment and fixtures including platforms and temporary staging.

Paints City facilities and equipment; prepares surfaces for painting; applies paint to building interiors, fixtures, equipment or exterior; strip, paint or stain cabinets, doors, and woodwork.

Performs a variety electrical repair and maintenance tasks involving City facilities; repairs, replaces, and maintains electrical wiring, fuses, switches, motors, generators, lighting systems, and other electrical fixtures and equipment; installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems; identifies damaged or worn electrical components and takes corrective action as assigned.

Performs general building maintenance duties as required; sets up and takes down of facilities in support of the facilities rental program; cleans facilities as required including bathrooms, kitchens and floors; services, inspects and performs minor repairs of electrical and HVAC systems and motorized equipment.

Maintains records of activities including preventative maintenance services and service requests.

Operates a variety of hand and power tools; works with a variety of chemicals including cleaning products, solvents, glues, etc.

Work cooperatively and effectively with contractors, the public and co-workers.

Performs related work as required.

Performs a variety of physical tasks associated with the work of a Building and Vehicle Maintenance Worker including sitting, standing with movement, walking, bending/stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching above shoulder, reaching below shoulder, reaching at shoulder, crouching, kneeling, lifting, carrying and pushing and pulling; repetitive hand and foot motion; hearing and vision abilities in accordance with the physical task analysis.

Mental Tasks:
Performs a variety of mental tasks associated with the work of a Building and Vehicle Maintenance Worker including reading; writing; math; detail orientation; working at a consistent pace; repetitious tasks; decision-making; meeting deadlines; reporting to supervisor(s); working around/with other staff; working alone; working with the public in accordance with the physical task analysis.

Exposures:
Performs a variety of tasks associated with the work of a Building and Vehicle Maintenance Worker in conditions that include work inside; work outside; wet; humid; noise/environment; vibration into hands; chemicals; blood/body fluids; fumes; odors; dust; poor ventilation; moving objects; high elevations; slippery surfaces; safety equipment; special clothing; carpeted floors; linoleum floors or cement; cold (less than 50°); heat (greater than 90°); temperature change in accordance with the physical task analysis.
JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:  common tools and materials used in building and public facility maintenance; basic operation of electrical pumps and motors; modern construction, repair and maintenance procedures; methods to fix small equipment; safe work practices and policies; standard practices, methods, materials and equipment used in facilities maintenance; occupational hazards and safe work practices associated with the work; operation and application of a variety of tools and equipment associated with the work.
Skill in:  performing required maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment; operating vehicles, tools and equipment in a safe manner; assessing facility and equipment problems and performing or recommending appropriate solutions and/or repairs; making arithmetical calculations, measurements and material and equipment requirements as required to service and/or repair facilities or equipment; accurately and legibly complete routine forms and reports.
Ability to:  perform janitorial and custodian services in a multi-use facility environment; operate light motorized equipment, hand and power tools skillfully and safely; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; work from sketches and drawings; operate modern communication devices and office equipment including cell phone, radio, and personal computer; work independently; understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn and retain specific and general information concerning, facilities, equipment, functions, and projects; work effectively with others encountered in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:
Education:  Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in maintenance, construction, or facilities maintenance.
Experience:  One year of full time experience in general maintenance, construction, or facilities maintenance.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION:
Licenses:  Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and continually meets requirements to maintain license and a good driving record.
SALARY:  $4,611 - $5,605 per month
