By the nature of its business, the City undertakes operations on a daily basis that involve risk. For example, employees drive vehicles and operate heavy equipment; the City enters into contracts, provides services, events and activities that can carry some risk for participants.
The Assistant City Manager serves as the City's Risk Manager,taking care that there is as little risk as possible associated with the operation of the City. The City mitigates risk by utilizing appropriate safety gear, providing on-going training to employees and implementing best practices in all aspects of City business. The Risk Management and Insurance division's primary goal is to ensure that residents and visitors to Foster City are safe.
However, sometimes, despite everyone's best efforts,unforeseen incidents can occur. Ultimately,since the City is the custodian of taxpayer assets (money), the Risk Manager is responsible to ensure that the City is adequately insured against such eventualities.
