April is Emergency Preparedness Month in California because the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake happened in April, which is a good reminder to all of us living in this earthquake-prone area that preparedness is the best defense against the results of a natural disaster. For the past 8 years, the Foster City Fire Department and its Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) have participated with the San Mateo County Health Department in the annual "Silver Dragon" exercise in which teams canvass neighborhoods, simulating the widespread distribution of life-saving medications that could be needed in a health emergency. This year's exercise was conducted on April 17, and you can read all about it in this press release.
But like Cities prepare, individuals and families also should prepare. Consider taking CERT training - it's fun and its free! CERT training is conducted periodically by the Fire Department. You can learn more at the CERT website. The Fire Department also has preparedness information on its website to get you started with personal planning.
