Thoughts for the New Year
I have been thinking for several weeks about what to write in my first Council Corner. First impressions are important and I do not want to start off on a bad note. So I decided to start by saying thank you.
I want to say thank you to everyone who voted in November, whether you voted for me or not. I want to say thank you to all the prior City Council Members who have left us with a City that is overall in wonderful shape and compared to many other California cities, is in excellent shape. I want to say thank you to the people who run Foster City; the other members of the City Council, the City Manager, the City staff and the citizen volunteers. You have all done an excellent job. I want to say thank you to my family, my wife, son, parents, in-laws; you have instilled in me the sense of obligation to give back to my community and to make it better. Finally, I want to thank all the citizens of Foster City because it is really you who every day make our City the wonderful place that it is. Thank you.
Although Foster City is in good shape it is not without its issues and continued, fiscally sound management is essential to keep us strong. I am committing myself to that goal in 2010. I am also committed to strengthening the City’s ability to meet the needs of our growing population of seniors. In 2010 I will be the City Council liaison to the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee where I hope to work with the Committee in new and ongoing projects. Starting in January the Rotary Club of Foster City will be sponsoring a senior meal program that will be run through the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee.
In 2010 I hope to work on a review of our technology systems with an eye toward citizen outreach and citizen communication. Are we using technology in the best way possible and if not, how can we improve? Are there better ways of communicating with the residents and businesses and how can we use technology to improve such communication? These are some of the goals I have set for myself for 2010.
Finally, perhaps my most important goal is to be available, responsive and respectful. I want to be available, so if you want to contact me you can reach me by email – email@example.com or by phone (650) 286-3504. I want to be responsive and so I pledge to respond to everyone who contacts me within one business day. I want to be respectful and so if you contact me I pledge that I will give you an honest answer to your issue, and treat you and your position with respect, whether we agree or disagree.
Those are my 2010 New Year’s Resolutions as a Council Member. I have put them in writing for all of you to see so you can call me to task if I do not pursue them fully and honestly. I only ask that each of you make one New Year’s Resolution to help the City in one way and pursue that resolution in 2010. If everyone can do that, we will surely be living in Paradise on Earth. Thank you and Happy New Year to you all.
