Strong Women
I attended a luncheon on April 30th presented by the Mills Peninsula Women’s Health Council. It was the 4th year I have attended but this year was the most interesting. There were 800 women (a handful of men) at this sold out function.
Beyond the beautiful tablecloths and flower arrangements there were some strong and powerful women. I felt honored to be amongst them.

I sat next to Mary Griffin, former Supervisor, and my friend and golfing buddy, Suzie Monteglas, with Alain Pinal Realtors. Both make and have made great contributions to our County. I am so proud to be part of this County where so many women serve in public office and in the private sector, serve as role models and make such a difference in all of our lives.

This luncheon was focused on raising money to support the Women’s Health Center facility at the Mills Hospital Campus. The speaker was Dr. Marianne J. Legato, M.D. who is a professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University who spoke about the differences in men and women’s bodies which affect their medication and their prognosis.

We always knew we were different and now there is proof!!!! Dr. Legato has written several books but her last “Adam’s Rib” is the one that she spoke on. One of my personal favorites is “Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget”. It does make sense now that I understand that testosterone makes them have a shorter memory.

Dr. Legato gave the example about having a huge fight one night and her husband rolled over and went sound asleep (snoring and twitching). She slept fitful and hardly at all. The next morning he was in the kitchen having his coffee and looking bright eyed and bushy tailed says “Good Morning Dear” without a clue that she was upset all night. He honestly didn’t remember…….sound familiar??? I purchased both books.

According to my dear friend Coleen Rafferty (Christianson & Rafferty Fine Jewelry was one of the underwriters), the live auction at the luncheon raised $27,000 for the digital mammography 3D machine at the Women’s Health Center. It is so comforting to know that the Bay Area has these dedicated groups of women that focus on women’s healthcare. They offer us such resources. I took the virtual tour on the Mills-Peninsula website to learn more.

I have raised two sons, Jason and Daniel. I will pass these books on to Daniel’s wife of two weeks, Julie, after I read them. Julie is a nurse so maybe she has studied the brain and can use that training to better understand married life and its complexities. I have to say Dr. Legato’s words were not only humorous but also very informative.

Just wanted to pass this new information to my constituents…….this time I won’t tell you to email with questions because I have no clue on how or why THEY do what they do!!!!

Whatever day you read this……. I hope it is a fun day.
