Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Automotive and household hazardous wastes include: motor oils, anti-freeze, latex and oil-based paints, paint thinners, and degreasers. Other chemicals including pool products and household products such as: cleaning supplies, hobby products, pesticides, and mercury thermometers are substances that must be disposed of properly. Recently added to the list are household batteries and fluorescent lights.

San Mateo Countywide Water Pollution Prevention Program (SMCWPPP) partners with residents and businesses to prevent pollution of our local water bodies; such as creeks, the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A comprehensive directory of automotive and household hazardous waste drop-off and buy-back locations is available online or to obtain further information contact San Mateo County Environmental Health Division at (650) 372-6200.
