Council Corner
August 9, 2006
by Vice Mayor Ron Cox
Why Foster City does not have a High School
| Several months ago I stated in my Council Corner that I was going to write about the history of the 15 acres. Foster City thought it was important to research and be very accurate with all the information. Well, after many months the City finally was able to put together a pretty thorough document. It was important to have all of this information when we were debating and deciding what was going to happen on the 15 acres site. There are 6 pages of facts with dates and backup documents.
I have asked the City to put this document of the history of the 15 acres on the City’s web page. There will be a link that will give you easy access so you can see for your self what really happened over the years. You can find it by logging on to www.fostercity.org, by doing this it will leave out all questions about the accuracy of what happened.
I have read it many times and have come to a conclusion as to why we do not have a high school. The number one reason is Prop 13. Foster City had started legislation at the State level to form its own school district that would have covered all grades K-12 and would have allowed a high school to be built, but Prop 13 was passed and all funding dried up and the legislation died.
Please take the time and read this document and it may very well get rid of the stories that have been floating around for years. Please make sure you attend one of the last couple FREE Summer Concerts on Fridays nights.
You may reach me via e-mail rcox@fostercity.org.
