Vacationing in Foster City
It seems that we cannot have a conversation without talking about the status of the local economy or the state and federal issues. With budget cuts and the job layoffs, most people are not even thinking about the vacation months, which I might add, are right around the corner. The recent hot days were a reminder that summer is coming and some people are trying to think about how to fill the vacation void.

Living in Foster City affords us the distinct opportunity to have fun this summer by just staying at home. Our Parks and Recreation Department provides free events, low cost programs, stress relief, volunteer possibilities and a social connection. The idea of staying local for vacation has coined a new term, “The Staycation.”

The concept of a “Staycation” first appeared in 2008 when gas prices were at a record high at the start of vacation travel and impacted many people who were cutting expenses. The proper “Staycation” should be about doing what you want to do. The ordinary vacation can tend to be stressful with packing, long lines, timelines, scheduling and logistics.

Staying at home for vacation can provide some unique opportunities. The key is to stay productive, refresh and recharge as too much down time can actually drain energy. Right off the bat, by staying home, we eliminate lodging expenses, costs for gas and the cost for dining out.

Let’s take a closer look at the opportunities that the Foster City Parks & Recreation Department has to offer families seeking low cost alternatives or individuals who desire a recreational outlet but are on a tighter budget these days.

  • Take a friend and walk or bike along the 8 miles of levee pedway that surrounds our City.
  • Take your dog to the newly renovated dog park or enjoy some off leash time in the morning at Farragut, Edgewater, Boothbay, Catamaran or Sea Cloud Parks.
  • Fire up the grill for a family barbeque at Boothbay Park where you can play basketball, baseball or a little tennis.
  • Enjoy quiet time for reading, napping or meditating at Leo Ryan Park looking over the majestic main Lagoon or walk barefoot in the sand at Marlin Park.
  • Rent a paddle boat and explore the lagoon system or enjoy a free concert in the park.
  • Take a break from the office and enjoy a picnic lunch in any of the many parks around our City.
  • Take a special class at the recreation center or play with the children and friends at the parks or watch a Little League or AYSO game at Sea Cloud Park.

The benefits of leisure activities can abound when you take advantage of your local Parks & Recreation Department services. Leisure activities improve moods, reduce stress and enhance a sense of wellness. Recreational programs provide organized, structured and fun activities. Regular volunteer work can increase life expectancy and socially involved people are two to five times less likely to suffer heart disease.

Recreation improves your quality of life. It fosters lifelong learning, gives one a sense of community and provides an opportunity to meet new friends. Your access to parks helps increase physical activity that maintains fitness and health. Children will enjoy time playing at the parks. Playing is an essential component to developing muscle strength, coordination, language and cognitive abilities.

During this challenging time, I encourage you to remember the services that are available to you through Parks & Recreation. Recreation is about “re-creation”… think of it as your reprieve from the pressure and stress of life; and it’s very economical!
