Upcoming Special Events
I know we are only coming into September, but I wanted to alert you to some special events during the month of October. October is Domestic Violence Prevention Awareness Month. As such, the San Mateo Domestic Violence Council has planned a couple of special events.

Unfortunately, domestic violence is the largest under-reported crime in America. This is because the victims are afraid for their own personal safety or the safety of their children. Although Domestic Violence is never acceptable in any situation, in October we make a special effort to educate the community and bring focus to an issue that crosses all political, geographic and economic lines. Yes, domestic violence occurs in the most affluent of homes as well as the poorest of homes. And, 17% of domestic violence victims are men. Those children who grow up in homes where domestic violence is tolerated are most likely to engage in or be victims of domestic violence as adults.

To help raise awareness of this issue, there is a Stop Family Violence Walk scheduled for October 10. It begins at 8:30 a.m. leaving from San Mateo Central Park and ends at Sor Juana Innes (one of the two providers of services to victims of Domestic Violence). All members of the public are welcome to join in this short walk which will conclude with a few select speakers, Supervisor Rose Jacob Gibson and State Senator Jackie Speier to name a few. Refreshments will also be served.

Another great event that will be occurring in October is the White Ribbon Campaign. It?s a commitment by men working to end men?s violence against women. Wearing a white ribbon is a statement that you will never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. By doing this you will foster a society free from violence against women.

Anyone needing services as a victim of domestic violence or needing to have questions answered can either call Sor Juana Innes 650-340-6360 or the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention 650-652-0800.

If you have questions on this issue or any other city related issues, please feel free to contact me. dwilder@fostercity.org. Please remember school is back in session, drive carefully.
