Yes, we are opening our new skate park and here are some facts on skate boarding and our new mobile skate park that will help you to better appreciate and enjoy this new recreation.
Mobile Skate Park Fact Sheet
Skateboarding is now the third largest participant sport in the United States and continues to grow in popularity.
The average age of skaters is between 12 and 14 years of age, however numbers are increasing on each side of this age bracket as the sport grows.
Foster City?s new Mobile Skate Park will provide a safe, legal environment with elements designed specifically for skateboarding.
27 different skate elements including launch ramps, wedge ramps, center, stairs, g-boxes, and grinding rails have been purchased for the new mobile skate park.
The elements will be stored in a trailer that will be moved between Sea Cloud Park and The Vibe, making the Park mobile.
Effective January 1, 2003, California has expanded its bicycle helmet law to require that children under 18 wear helmets each time they use a skateboard, inline skates, roller skates or scooter, making the state?s child helmet law the strictest in the nation. Violators face fines of $25.
Summer Schedule is as follows:
Mondays and Wednesdays, Sea Cloud Park,1 pm-6 pm
Fridays, The Vibe, 1 pm-6 pm
Saturdays, The Vibe, 1 pm-6 pm
There is no doubt about it, skateboarding can be fun but every one must make a conscientious effort to follow safe practices.
Here are some suggestions and requirements that we got from the State Association of Parks. Your adherence to this guidance will assure continued safe operation.
Safety facts:
You can prevent most skateboarding injuries if you follow all of these recommendations:
Learn the basic skills of skateboarding, especially how to stop properly. Also learn slowing and turning techniques, and how to fall safely.
Wear proper protective equipment. Before getting on your skateboard, empty your pockets of all hard and sharp objects and put on your protective gear. Essential protective equipment includes:
A properly fitting helmet that meets safety standards
Wrist guard
Knee and elbow pads
Shoes
There is one precaution I want to point out and that is:
Skateboarding is not recommended for young children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):
Children under age 5 should never ride a skateboard
Children aged 6-10 need close supervision from an adult or trustworthy adolescent whenever they ride a skateboard
It is important to recognize this limitation. However, to try and be as responsive as we can to our younger set, our Parks people are going to hold and manage some special events just for 7 and 8 year olds.
See you on the 23rd!
