For the last couple years I have written about the geese in our City. Foster City has been working hard to keep them out of our City parks. We have hired a company that has dogs that chase the geese out of the parks and our City crews also will try to scare them out of our parks.
The one area we have not addressed is the schools in our City that have even a bigger problem with the geese. Our school district has no extra money or personnel to handle the problem. For the last couple years I have asked our City to try and help the elementary schools here in Foster City. The same kids that play in our parks are the same kids that attend our schools.
At our last City Council meeting the Council decided to work with the schools and pay to have our dogs chase the geese off the school grounds also. The San Mateo Foster City Elementary School District has agreed to help, along with each school. I asked the City Council to let me lead the way along with Kevin Miller, Director of Parks and Recreation.
The effort does not work with just chasing the geese with the dogs, but takes an effort from everybody. We are having our first meeting with the school district and school principals to start strategizing on what will be needed to make this work. I think with a combination of our City, the schools and maybe some parent volunteer groups, we make it all happen.
I will keep you informed over the next several months of the progress that is being made. I can be reached via e-mail rcox@fostercity.org.
